Ryland and his partnership donated over 500 acres to POST (Peninsula Open Space Trust), which is the iconic landmark known as "Windy Hill" in Portola Valley. He was a 40-year member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation; and a ten-year member of the Board of Directors of the Djerassi Residence Artist Retreat in Woodside. He is a Palo Alto native, attended Palo Alto High, and graduated from Stanford University (class of 1949). He married classmate Shirley Sneath, of Hillsborough, and they have three grown sons: Rich (Stanford), Tom (UC Berkeley), and Bruce (Princeton). Rye and Shirley were 50-year residents of Ladera, and now live in Woodside.
